| One would think bad times mean people take less chances (a new franchise for ex.). But with all the layoffs and limited opportunities during bad times, maybe franchises actually increase. Is there any research available on this? Does anyone know the general rule?

| DEAR SIR, AS WE KNOW,THE PERCENTAGE OF PROSPECTIVE POTENTIAL INVESTORS HAS REDUCED IN EVERY SECTOR GLOBALLY AS PER CURRENT ECONOMIC CRISIS.FRANCHISING CAN BE A CONSIDERABLE OPTION WHERE FRANCHISORS REWORK THERE PLAN MODELS AND EMPHASIZE MORE ON MINIMUM GUARANTEE THAT INVESTORS ARE LOOKING FOR THAT MINIMIZES THERE RISK ON INVESTMENT.

There are a number of media articles pointing to a dramatic rise in franchise interest in recessionary times. When Joe or Jill Executive get a pink slip, and realize it's very unlikely they'll get another 9 to 5 job, they seriously consider getting into business for themselves. In looking at the options, a franchise springs forth and looks more attractive than going it alone from scratch.
There are some articles that discuss this on the Franchise Foundations website. http://www.franchisefoundations.com. I noticed one even mentions the franchise industries that are expected to do well, despite the recession, and how the U.S. Council of Mayors has a task force looking at franchising as a way to jump-start local economies.

| I would say on average that franchise sales *decrease* in a recession for multiple reasons including but not limited to: availability of capital by franchisees, advertising spent by franchisor, etc. I would also note that some franchises are growing. I read on some franchise forums at:http://www.thenakedtruthonline.com/franchise-forums/ The Naked Truth Online's Franchise Forums With over 250 franchises online, you subscribe to RSS feeds of franchises you are either interested in or franchises which you are already an existing franchisee. Many of the forum posts are by actual franchisees and by gauging whether they want in or out, you can get an idea of how the franchise is doing in this recession.
