Our company, Franchise Performance Improvement, provides traning and consulting services to franchisors.  One of the companies we've worked with in the past wants to contract with an external professional trainer to conduct their initial operations trianing.  What are the advantages and disadvantages of hiring an expernal trainer as opposed to having an internal person conduct the training?

Their are some advantages to outsourcing your franchises training. We currently use a business mentor who specializes in business growth, and he teaches our general business education classes only. He also will be part of our new franchise mentoring, specializing in lead generation and tracking to get new customers to our franchisees. This has been a good partnership for us as he understands the franchise world and he works effortlesly with our business model.

The disadvantages of outsourcing are maintaining control of the subject matter and the confidentiality of your brand. Can you mantain this confidential relationship and will your outsourced vendor always have your interests in mind? The way I see it, no one knows your franchise model like you do. The best way to train your franchisees is with trainers who know your business model inside and out. Outsource the non-confidential areas and provide in-house training for the confidential brand instruction.

An example is sales training. Using the best resources to make your franchisees good salesmen, is to provide the foundation for the succes of your franchise organization. Especially for the franchisor. By using any one of the competent sales programs available, you can train your franchisees to be great salesmen.

The bottom line is to determine what direction will be more financially sound for you. An in house training director and staff or outsourced program. Confidentiality of the brand when using an outside vendor is the other key factor in deciding how to build your training department.

Outsourcing training to a third party who doesn't know anything about the business makes about as much (non)sense as hiring a franchise consultant (who suffers from the same experience disability) and paying them $20,000 or more to write a franchise operations manual. There are some great articles on these topics on the Franchise Foundations website. Start with the Franchise Operations Manual http://www.franchisefoundations.com/operationsmanuals.html page. Good Luck!
